News, Views and comment about Liverpool FC

The Liverpool defender Fabio Aurelio is entering the last six months of his three year contract with the Reds, but has turned down Liverpool’s offer of an extension, which means he will be free to talk to other clubs in January.

His manager Rafael Benitez is still hoping that Aurelio will change his mind and intends talking to the Brazilian again.

“Fabio has been really unlucky. When we spoke to him about an extension he had an injury and he has had a lot of injuries in the past,” said Benitez.

“We made him an offer and the agent said not at the moment.

“We will talk to him again in the future because he is a good person and great professional.

“Maybe the situation needs to be looked at in a different way. He has to be realistic. I know he’s pleased here and the important thing is I have a good relationship with him.”

Aurelio has just passed his 30th birthday and his next contract is likely to be his last.

When he joined Liverpool from Valencia he moved on a Bosman transfer, which means he can command a higher wage. Perhaps he intends to do the same thing this time around.
