Benitez - It's not impossible...

The Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez saw his team undone by a Lyon equalizer in the 90th minute last night, but refuses to give up on a place in the Champions League knockout stages until it is mathematically impossible.

Ryan Babel looked to have scored the winner for Liverpool just seven minutes from the end, but Lyon’s Brazilian striker Lisandro broke Liverpool’s hearts with a 90th minute equalizer.

The only way Liverpool can qualify now is if Lyon win their next game away at Fiorentina, and then Liverpool have to beat the Italians at Anfield. This is not an impossible scenario and Benitez still believes it can be done.

“It is difficult but not impossible, now.” he said.

“We have to win our first game and see what happens between Fiorentina and Lyons. We have produced miracles before, perhaps we can do it again,”.

“I’m really disappointed because it was a great opportunity.”

The Lyon manager Claude Puel assured Benitez that his team would be going to Italy for all three points.

“You don’t have to worry; we will play fair because we want first place in the group,” he said.

“We don’t want to end up like last season. We will manage the points and Liverpool will have the fate in their own hands.”
