According to rumours going around today, the Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has lost the confidence of at least three of the senior players in the team, and they have decided that they don’t him to be in charge any longer.

An un-named source was quoted in the LFCGlobe as saying: “Three Liverpool players are absolutely against Benitez to remain at the club.

“Aurelio, Mascherano and the skipper are unhappy with the team’s form this season and blame Benitez for it.

“Gerrard looked disinterested in training and Benitez had a go at him but Stevie wasn’t having any of it and the two aren’t currently talking.”

If this is true then surely Rafa;s days are numbered?

The Liverpool transfer rumours continue to pour in as Rafael Benitez tries hard to find a formula to take the Reds out of the slump that has seen them win just three of their last fifteen games.

Todays offering comes from the ever-entertaining Sun newspaper, and suggests that Benitez is ready to offer cash-strapped West Ham £6m for their battling midfielder Scott Parker.

David Gold and David Sullivan have offered £50m to buy West Ham, but if the deal doesn’t go through, the Sun believes they will be forced into a fire sale in January, and Benitez will be trying to force their hand with an offer for Parker.

They also think that Mascherano will be sold to Barcelona in the summer if he continues to refuse a new contract an Anfield, and Parker would be the perfect replacement.

Parker is well-respected at Upton Park and won the Player-of-the-Year award last season.

The Liverpool co-owner George Gillet has been desperately wooing the Saudi billionaire Prince Faisal to try and persuade him to invest £300m, but with the club now out of the Champions League and struggling to keep up in the race for fourth place in the Premiership, the oil magnate has decided that the club is not such a good investment after all.

The People reports: Prince Faisal feels the asking price to buy out the club – £300million – is too high. And the option of taking just a 50 per cent stake does not appeal because the Saudi prince does not fancy a boardroom battle for power.

The collapse of the deal is a savage blow for Liverpool who know that they must make the top four this season or lose out on the Champions League money that has been central to their planning.

Gillett had hoped the Saudi money would end years of bickering with co-owner Tom Hicks and score brownie points with Anfield fans.

Kop sources now say that Gillett is taking a back seat and that Texan Hicks, the hard man of the duo, is calling the shots about future planning.

They go on to say that this will put paid to any chance of Rafael Benitez getting funds to improve the squad in January, and that the Spaniard may be forced to sell Macherano to fund his necessary purchases.

Benitez said yesterday that he has been hampered by the need to repay the massive debts hanging over the club, and now it looks like there won’t be any improvement in the near future.

The Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano is certain that the Arsenal striker Andrei Arshavin will not be running riot again this year, after the Russian scored all four Arsenal goals in a thrilling 4-4 draw.

“Arshavin was enormous against us last season but there will not be a repeat. The madness of last season is not possible again. We have learned how to stop him and I am convinced he will not create problems for us this time,” said Mascherano.

“Cesc Fabregas is the key for the Gunners. Arshavin is dangerous but without Fabregas’ work things can change. He is decisive and it’s our mission to make sure he doesn’t feel comfortable,” he added.

Arshavin is likely to be given the job of main striker again tomorrow, as he did well in that position last week in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Stoke City, but Mascherano believes that Liverpool now have the strike force ready to shoot Arsenal down this time around.

He said: “We had Fernando Torres back against Fiorentina in midweek, Stevie Gerrard is getting fitter with every game and Alberto Aquilani started as well.

“All those things can only be good for us. We know we’re a better team than we have shown.”

The Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano is keen for the team to pull themselves out of their recent slump, and says that they have a chance to prove that they are still a good team by beating Arsenal on Sunday.

“It’s difficult because we’re not winning two or three games in a row at the moment. All of us want to win and to get the confidence. We want to play like we can play.

“We have a big game on Sunday to show ourselves, to show the fans and to show everyone that Liverpool still has a good team that can fight for something.

“It’s not must-win on Sunday but it’s really important. It’s not just about the three points, it’s about the situation.”

The Argentina captain only has 18 months left on his contract, and Rafael Benitez seemed confident last week that Mascherano would be willing to sign a contract extension, but the player himself refused to talk about the matter.

He said: “I just talk about football – not about contracts or money. I want to play.

“I am playing for Liverpool, I am a Liverpool player and, like the manager says, I have two more years on my contract so I think I don’t have to say anything else.

“I play for Liverpool and will continue playing and trying to give my best.”

If he doesn’t sign by the end of the season, Benitez may be forced to sell him in the summer, with Barcelona hot favourites for his signature.

The Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano is calling for calm while the team get through this injury-ridden episode, and says that the team is improving and needs to kickstart the season with a confidence-boosing win in Hungary tomorrow.

“It is a big game for us and we have to put Saturday behind us and look forward,” he said.

“All of us were really disappointed afterwards, but it was a strange game. We had to make two substitutions after just 18 minutes. It is difficult when you have so many injuries and then you pick up more on the pitch.

“But it is very important for us to win against Debrecen, not only to give ourselves a chance in the Champions League, but also to build confidence for the future.

“We also have Everton to come, which is another very, very important game, but we have to think about Debrecen first.

“That is the most important thing – we can think about Everton afterwards.”

“I think we deserved to win against City,”

“We played well, but we are conceding goals and that makes it difficult if you want to win. It is a problem and we have to improve.

“The team have performed well in the last two or three games. We’re improving little by little, but we are still making mistakes and we have to cut them out if we are to start winning.

“We are Liverpool, and we want to improve and show on the pitch that we are a top side.”

Well said Javier, now get on the pitch and show us what you can do!

There are a couple of Liverpool transfer stories out today, and the big one is the report in the News of the World. They say that Barcelona are still very keen on persuading Rafael Benitez to finally let Mascherano move to Spain, and think that Benitez will agree to a deal.

Many people believe that the Argentinian’s poor performances this season are due to the fact that he was unsettled by the approaches from Barcelona in the summer, and it looks like they haven’t given up.

The NOTW reckons that Benitez will be willing to let him go this time, as he is still desperate to get another striker to take some of the pressure of Fernando Torres, and with an expected £20m windfall from Mascherano he will be free to invest it all on another hitman.

The second bit of transfer news is from Andrea Dossena, who has been saying for ages that he is desperate for a move back to Italy, and it would be a surprise if Benitez will put up with his moaning much longer.

Today he said: “I know that three big Serie A clubs – Napoli, Juventus and Milan – are looking at me,”

“In August they just made other choices. I was very close to going to Juventus in the summer but they signed Fabio Grosso.

“I am now worried I will miss the World Cup.”

Surely it is only a matter of time before Benitez cahes in on Dossena, whose performances have never quite lived up to the billing as one of Italy’s best young defenders.

But he admitted that it was probably his own fault that Benitez didn’t pick him very often.

“I’m not disappointed with the treatment I’ve had,” he added.

“I know how things work and I’ve always behaved correctly. Benitez chooses the line-up, and I’m paid to respect his choices.

“In truth I am a little bit unhappy with my performances. They have not seen the ‘real’ Dossena at Anfield.”

The Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano says that winning a place at the World Cup was important for him, but his priority is to play well for Liverpool.

He says that the long flights from South America after international games is leaving him too exhausted to perform to the best of his ability for Liverpool.

“I spent 20 hours on a plane coming back from South America,” he said. “When I got here, all of us who had been away with our countries wanted to play and we all wanted to win. But, in that situation, it’s tough. That’s not an excuse. It’s the reality.

“After a flight like that, you are never 100 per cent. You cannot be. It takes time to recover so all you can do is give your best.
‘With so many games for club and country, I’ve been too busy. When our season here is finished then I will think about the World Cup. It was important to qualify. But Liverpool is just as important for me. This is my club and I live here. This is my priority.”

Many fans have been saying that Mascherano’s bad form this season is because of the Barcelona’s attempt to take him to Spain in the summer, but he insists that thas has not affected him.

He said: ‘Everyone knows Barcelona were interested in me but that’s in the past now. Liverpool said no and that’s the end of it. Some might say I haven’t been playing well because Barcelona tried to buy me.

‘I agree I haven’t been at my best but it’s not because of that. I just haven’t started the season well.”

Well at least he has admitted he is not playing to his best form. And, hopefully, now that Argentina have secured their place at the World Cup, he can get his head down and start concentrating on his club. It’s time for him to prove that Liverpool really is his priority.
