Wenger - Benitez is super!
The Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has come out in support of the under-fire Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez, and thinks that he should be judged on his whole record, not just the last eight games.
“Over his first 200 league games he has a better win-ratio that Alex Ferguson or me,” Wenger said. “Rafa Benitez is a super manager.
“But we live in a world where judgements are only made in the present. That’s why it’s so important directors are strong enough to resist reacting to that.
“The Premier League this season is more open than ever. Everybody’s lost two games at least. If it goes like that the champions will lose seven games at least.”
Liverpool really need a confidence boosting win over Birmingham this weekend to get their season back on track. Anything less and they will definitely be dropping out of contention.

As an Arsenal fan I agree with Wenger and know where he’s coming from. We had the exact same issues last season. Injuries to key players and 5 losses in our first 14 games, led to many people claiming we’re not good enough to challenge and we should have brought more players in the summer unbelievably we even had calls for Wenger to be sacked, yet we reached the semis of both the champions league and FA cup, and went on an unbeaten run of 22 games in the league.
It might not be apparent at the moment but Liverpool will bounce back, Champions league qualification is not impossible and there’s plenty of time to gain ground in the league and challenge for the FA cup. You can’t prepare for the amount of injuries you have suffered recently (Arsenal fans know that all too well) but I do feel that liverpool lack a replacement for Torres, I know liverpool fans don’t want to hear it but having the best striker in the world has perhaps led to an over reliance on him. I’d be crying out for David Villa in january and Van der Vaart, or a loan deal with AC Milan for Klaas jan Huntelaar who is languishing on the bench in the season before the world cup.
Overall it’s been a poor start but not the disaster that the media and some fans are claiming and I can say as an Arsenal fan we’d much prefer to see Liverpool win things than any of the other teams (bar Arsenal of course).
